Chocolate Good for You?

ChocolateDid the Easter Bunny lower your chances of having a heart problem?  It appears in small doses of chocolate, preferably dark chocolate, each day just might decrease your risk of having a heart attack or stroke by almost 40% according to a new study anyway.

Researchers in Germany followed 19,357 people, aged between 35 and 65, for at least ten years and found that those who ate the most amount of chocolate – an average of 7.5 grams a day – had lower blood pressure and a 39% lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke compared to those who ate the least amount of chocolate.  That is an average of 1.7 grams a day. The difference between the two groups amounts to six grams of chocolate, which is the equivalent of less than one small square of a 100g bar. German researchers sent them several questionnaires about their diet and exercise habits.

They found people who had an average of six grams of chocolate per day — or about one square of a chocolate bar — had a 39% lower risk of either a heart attack or stroke. The study was published March 30 in the European Heart Journal.

Previous studies have suggested dark chocolate in small amounts could be good for you, but this is the first study to track its effects over such a long period of time. Experts think the flavonols contained in chocolate are responsible. Flavonols, also found in vegetables and red wine, help the muscles in blood vessels widen, which leads to a drop in blood pressure.

“It’s a bit too early to come up with recommendations that people should eat more chocolate, but if people replace sugar or high-fat snacks with a little piece of dark chocolate, that might help,” said Brian Buijsse, a nutritional epidemiologist at the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, Germany, the study’s lead author.

Are you ready to yell your news from the highest mountain? A new life has entered the world!  Your little angel has just made their entrance and you want to introduce your little one to the world with grace, elegance, and sweetness.  One online service will work with you to create just the right baby announcements for your precious babe or babies!  Can even choose photo birth announcements so that your buddy can see how beautiful your little angel is.

The people tracked by Buijsse and colleagues had no history of heart problems, had similar habits for risk factors like smoking and exercise, and did not vary widely in their Body Mass Index.

Since the study only observed people and did not give them chocolate directly to test what its effects were, experts said more research was needed to determine the candy’s exact impact on the body. The study was paid for by the German government and the European Union.

Doctors also warned that eating large amounts of chocolate could lead to weight gain, a major risk factor for heart problems and strokes.

“The biggest problem with this is not to gain weight,” Buijsse said. “Eating too much chocolate will have negative effects that far outweigh the positive effects of cocoa.”  People hoping to benefit from chocolate’s heart healthy effects should cut out other snacks and sweets if they wanted to eat chocolate.

My Take: Maybe that is why it I have a regular blood pressure while being overweight.  I do not eat much candy, but I do get at least a small piece of chocolate every day to curb my sweet tooth.  I have been having most of my life and now I’m unable to exercise due to disability.  Yes, when I was a child I had a very, very large sweet tooth.  Not anymore!

I wish I could utilize Pilates exercise to lose weight, but I have myasthenia gravis.  In simplest terms, it is like having muscle fatigue 24/7.  If I could afford a personal trainer to give me Pilates instruction, I would.  Unfortunately, SSA does not pay enough.  I have even considered Alexander Technique because it is not really an exercise so much as learning to control your body.  If you would like to find out what is the Alexander technique, you can easily do a search on the Internet or click this link.

Now, most exercise I get is cleaning house.  Maryland House cleaning is not easy when you’re disabled.  Maybe I should look into Maryland maid services!  I probably couldn’t afford that either.  Then again, I look at it positively, I am getting some exercise!

Do Crazy Diets Work? Part 2

DietingKate Winslet — The Facial Analysis Diet

Five years ago Kate gave birth to a healthy baby boy before she won her 2008 Oscar.  She gained more than 50 pounds just like many women she kept the weight after the birth of her son.  Elizabeth Gibaud, a nutritionist, met Kate and told her what minerals she was lacking to lose weight.  Gibaud has developed a revolutionary weight loss program just by looking at your face she can tell you what minerals you need.

“I look for markings, facial color and skin texture,” Gibaud told the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “This tells me which minerals are lacking.”

For example, according to Gibaud, open pores means there is too much acid in your system, and having stress lines means you are lacking mineral salt.

In her book, “The Facial Anayalsis Diet,” Gibraud outlines the six face categories that most people fall into and then lists the foods to eat and the foods to avoid. The book promises that if you modify your diet based on your specific face category, you will see results.

“My prognosis is 95% successful,” Gibaud told the Daily Mail. “Once I have designed a package suited to your needs, all you have to do is stick to it, and like Kate you’ll soon see immediate results.”

But the plan is more shady from a nutritionist’s perspective.

“A lot of this is marketing,” said Lawrence. “All you have to do to lose weight is to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet and keep processed foods to a minimum.”

If you’re losing something other than weight . . . Hair loss can often be an undesirable aspect of life. Fortunately, with recent advances in technology, there are several treatments that may reduce, prevent, or even reverse hair loss.  One Arizona hair transplant facility now uses one of the newest treatments for hair loss.  This new treatment is laser hair therapy.

Reese Witherspoon — The Baby Food Diet

Hollywood is always trying to look younger, but now it seems some of them are even eating younger — a lot younger.

The Baby Food Diet consists of substituting one or two meals a day with a jar of baby food. The other one to two meals a day can be regular “adult meals.”

Lawrence thinks that this is one of the better weight loss ideas out there because baby food is just mashed fruits and vegetables.

“It is the least processed of the processed foods,” he said.

“I love looking at baby food containers,” Lawrence said. “If the flavor is apple berry, you turn the bottle to the other side and the ingredients are just apple, raspberries and blueberries.”

“If you want to eat tons of baby food,” Lawrence added, “Go for it. It is much healthier than what most people are eating, and the best part is there is not a need for extreme portion control. If you want to eat tons of baby food you are most likely not going to gain weight.”

He said that because infant digestive systems are immature, the baby food is fairly free of additives and fillers.

And the best part, lunch can cost as little as 60 cents.

Kim Cattrall  — The Facelift Diet

Can you erase facial lines and depuff your eyes by eating just fish?

Dr. Nicolas Perricone, creator of the the Perricone Weight Loss Diet, thinks so. And so do Kim Catrall and Julia Roberts, who are two of the many celebrities that have been on the Perricone diet.

Perricone believes a diet high in proteins, which according to him have natural anti-inflammatory properties, can decrease the skin’s wrinkling and other signs of aging.

His favorite source of protein is organic, wild salmon. In fact, for the first three days of his 28-day plan, the dieter is supposed to eat a four- to six-ounce filet of salmon at every meal. So those who don’t like fish need not apply.

The diet also calls for followers to cut out foods that cause water-retention such as refined sugars and fats.

Lawrence said that on a theoretical level Omega 3 does help with skin.

“Having a healthy intake of Omega 3 does lead to less wrinkling,” he said. “What you eat can, of course, affect your skin. For example, carotene-rich foods help prevent sunburn naturally. That said, no study has linked this diet to a significant amount of weight loss.”

Gwyneth Paltrow — The GOOP Diet

In 2008, Paltrow started her own personal lifestyle Web site called GOOP. The Web site includes diet recommendations, exercise ideas and ways to get yourself moving.

GOOP’s tag line is “nourish the inner aspect,” and it allows readers to sign up for weekly newsletter that focus on one of the subjects: make, go, get, do, be or see.

After the holidays, Paltrow sent out a GOOP newsletter telling readers how she was going to “lose a few pounds of holiday excess.”

“You can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat,” Paltrow wrote, “as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process.”

The newsletter then went on to describe a seven-day detox diet that has almost every day starting with a smoothie and ending with a dinner of soup.

“I will be suffering along with you to kick-start my year a bit lighter,” Paltrow wrote. “Good luck to us all!”

“If possible, I like to see food with fiber being eaten, instead of liquid,” Lawrence said. “But honestly, in the end, a healthy diet is not about detoxing, it is about eating unprocessed foods. Eat unprocessed and you will be OK.”  He also said that he was not a big fan of liquid diets.

My Take: As I stated at the end of the first part of this two-part article, I am not into fad diets!  If I had no other choice, I would rather go to Alameda CA liposuction surgeon.  It might be painful, but it will be quicker and healthier.  I understand the Brentwood CA arm reduction surgery can even reduce the amount that you have in your arms.

If you’re not into pain, and your patient person, you might talk to your doctor.  They will use glucose analyzers to check your blood sugar.  And they will probably do further blood testing with a hematology analyzer to check your triglycerides.  Then they will use a few pharmaceutical diagnostics to beat you on your right path to losing weight.  Your doctor might even suggest herbal remedies to help you lose weight.

Many men today are using a safe impotence treatment that many doctors recommended a.  It is called herbal Viagra.  Then again, many go to a doctor for this kind of treatment.  Just as you do to lose weight safely.

Do Crazy Diets Work? Part 1

Dieting 2Some of the most popular diets today are celebrity diets.  However, celebrity diets are sometimes too good to be true.  With Spring’s arrival and summer right around the corner, this means that the string bikini sitting in the back of your dresser drawer will be making an appearance soon.

For those fearing stepping out in swimwear, the allure of a quick fat-loss program or a celebrity diet can be too much to pass up. But the truth is that not all of them deliver the results they claim to.

Dr. Marc Lawrence, the self-proclaimed celebrity diet doctor, studied at Cornell Medical School and trained in emergency medicine at Stanford and general surgery at Harvard. On his Web site, celebritydietdoctor.com, he breaks down celebrity fad diets into fact and fiction.

“This is my way of reaching out to people,” Lawrence told ABCNews.com. “A lot of people are interested in celebrities and their nutrition, so I take that and I add real nutrition advice to the celebrity plans.”

Lawrence’s main advice when it comes to dieting is to go fresh and natural.

“The way to get healthy and lose weight is to eat unprocessed foods,” Lawrence said. “For example, take four ounces of corn straight from the cob. That is about 90 calories. Now mash them down into tortillas. Those are about 290 calories. Then dry those out and add sugar to make corn flakes, which are around 400 calories. Finally, press those out and add fats to get 600 calories worth of flavored corn chips. We have gone from 90 calories for four ounces of corn to 600 calories from 4 ounces of flavored corn chips.

“Everybody wants to be a part of the new diet craze,” Lawrence added. “Everybody wants the secret, but the real secret is staring them in the face from the produce aisle.”

Amanda Seyfried — The Raw Food Diet

In her new movie “Chloe,” Amanda Seyfried is looking better than ever. She openly credits the raw food diet for her figure.

The diet consists of eating only unprocessed and uncooked foods. The proponents of this diet believe that when food is cooked, enzymes that aid in digestion are destroyed and the positive nutritional effects of the food can be lessened. The diet includes lots of fruits, veggies and nuts, but it also can include sushi or homemade cheeses and yogurts. If you can hand-make it from raw parts, you can eat it.

Seyfried admitted in the April issue of Esquire magazine that the diet is working to keep her slim. Whether or not she enjoys the diet is another story.

“It’s intense. And sort of awful,” Seyfriend told Esquire. “Yesterday for lunch? Spinach. Just spinach, spinach and some seeds.”

But Seyfried suffers for her art.

“I have to stay in shape because I am an actress,” Seyfried told Glamour magazine last month. “It’s twisted, but I wouldn’t get the roles otherwise.”

In Lawrence’s opinion, the raw foods diet is the best way to lose weight.

“Raw food is a great diet,” Lawrence said. “If you are looking to lose weight, it is good to eat foods that are high in water content like vegetables. The raw food diet purports eating foods that are high in water, low in calories and high in nutrition. The reason we are fat is because we are eating processed foods, so a diet that says only eat unprocessed, natural foods is great.”

Do you live in New Jersey and can’t get to the doctor’s office? A healthcare facility whose mission is to provide innovative, coordinated, patient-centered care for seniors now provides Monmouth County NJ house calls doctors.  They have board certified nurse practitioners that provide home-based primary care services with the goal of illness prevention and health maintenance.  NJ home health care providers though to patients’ homes, place of residence or location of care such as medical daycare centers, nursing homes and assisted living residences.

Jennifer Aniston — The Zone Diet

Remember when Aniston appeared on the cover of GQ wearing nothing but a necktie — at 40?

Even “over the hill,” Aniston is still looking fabulous. Recently, Gerard Butler, her co-star in “The Bounty Hunter,” said that Aniston “has the best legs in Hollywood.”

Aniston credits a mixture of the Zone Diet and regular exercise in the form of cardio and yoga for her figure.

In the GQ article, she said that by sticking to the Zone Diet, with occasional splurges, she keeps her body photo-spread ready.

The Zone Diet, created by Dr. Barry Sears, tells followers to eat a 40:30:30 ratio of carbs, proteins and fats.

Lawrence believes the zone diet is too high in proteins.

“You don’t need more than 10 percent of your diet to be proteins,” Lawrence said. “Bringing it up to 30 percent is unnecessary. There is also a big difference in plant-based proteins and animal-based proteins. The plant-based proteins like nuts and beans are superior to the animal-based proteins. It has been proven multiple times that cultures with high animal-based protein diets have an increased risk of heart disease.”

Kelly Osborne — The Bar Method

The chubby girl from reality TV’s “The Osbournes” is no more.

Kelly Osbourne, 25, was featured on the cover of Us Weekly last month for dropping more than 40 pounds. The starlet, whose parents are Ozzy and Sharon, has been dropping weight since appearing on last season’s “Dancing with the Stars.” Osbourne said she achieved her new figure by controlling her diet and using a dance-based exercise program called the bar method.

According to the Barmethod.com the routine is a mixture of ballet and Pilates. The workout “creates a uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body” by using “the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning.”

Lawrence said that the most important thing is to just get up and move.

“As far as exercise is concerned,” Lawrence said, “just walk. Find a way to fit walking into your lifestyle. Remember that you are never going to lose a lot of weight through exercise. You will lose the weight by changing your diet, but exercise is going to keep it off.”

Osbourne told Us Weekly that she used to weigh almost 160 pounds and despite being in and out of drug rehab three times, the weight was all that was talked about.

“I took more hell for being fat than I did for being an absolute raging drug addict,” Osbourne told Us Weekly. “I will never understand that.”

Osbourne told Us Weekly that she does not call her weight loss plan a diet; she calls it “a commitment to a life change.”  She tries to keep a very positive attitude when it comes to losing weight.

My Take: I do not like the idea of everybody coming up with your own diet plan.  Today people are so into this you can buy weight loss products just that anywhere.  I mean, you can even buy colon cleansers at your local drugstore.  You won’t lose weight to go see your doctor and follow your doctor’s instructions.

I had an aunt who was into every single fad diet that came along and she ended up with cancer of the abdomen.  Needless to say, she died!  If she would’ve just taken organic multivitamins and followed her doctor’s instructions, she might be alive today.  I remember one of the things she was lacking was whey protein, strange which remember from childhood but someone who died.

Today’s society is so concerned about healthy bodies that it makes it difficult for those people who are obese.  Someone who is overweight is very self-conscious.  I know that you could ask of Pensacola plastic surgeon how they help someone who is overweight and they will tell you by removing the excess flesh or skin when they lose weight.  I know someone who has lost a lot of weight will even get a Tallahassee FL face lift because they don’t want to look at their double chin anymore.

Cardiac Patients Remain Healthy with the Help of EHRs

October 19th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Healthcare

Cited: On the Record Magazine

A program that cut cardiac deaths by 73% by linking coronary artery disease patients and teams of pharmacists, nurses, primary care doctors and cardiologists with an EHR has kept patients healthy two years after they left the program by keeping them in touch with their caregivers and counselors, according to a randomized study by Kaiser Permanente (KP) published in The American Journal of Managed Care.

This is the first randomized study to evaluate a follow-up system for patients discharged from a cardiovascular risk reduction service, according to researchers.  The Clinical Pharmacy Cardiac Risk Service at KP Colorado combines the KP Healthconnect EHR with proactive patient outreach, education, lifestyle adjustments and effective medication management. The two-year randomized trial of 421 patients found that patients discharged from the program kept their lipid and blood pressure levels at controlled, healthy levels by receiving electronic reminder letters.

“Because of lack of adherence to medications and failure to maintain treatment goals are so high among heart disease patients, we wanted to find out what would happen to the patients after they were discharged from the program but remained in contact with the healthcare system through our electronic health record,” says study lead author Kari L. Olson, PharmD, a clinical pharmacy specialist with KP Colorado is Cardiac Risk Reduction Program. “The takeaway message here is that we can help support patients in maintaining treatment goals and medication adherence, which is often a challenge with most chronic conditions. Using technology and integrated systems already in place, we can help keep patients healthy for longer and deliver continuity of care in a cost-effective manner.”

For those who want to protect their data . . . It is small consolation, but you are not alone in struggling with the challenges of securing a network with network security software. Attacks grow in sophistication and frequency with each passing week.  Information security policy and regulatory compliance is now a core business requirement and the consequences of non-compliance are increasingly severe. The cost of a single security incident can be crippling, if not ruinous.  This means you need good intrusion prevention systems to stay secure.

In the study, 421 patients in the Clinical Pharmacy Cardiac Risk Service with well-controlled blood pressure and cholesterol levels were randomized so that 214 continued in the program to receive intensive direct counseling from the control team. The other 207 patients were discharged from the program back to their primary care physician. The mean age of the trial participants was 72 and 74% were male.

The patients who were discharged from the program had electronic reminders and nurture it to ensure it their lipid panels were ordered annually, with the results sent directly to their primary care physician. The discharged patients also received reminder letters, generated by KP HealthConnect, indicating they were due for a lab test. The study found that patients discharged from the program maintain control of their risk factors with the help of electronic reminder letters. The EHR intervention was as effective as keeping cholesterol and blood pressure in check compared to the more intensive counseling approach offered to those patients who stayed enrolled in the program.

The program also achieved the following results:Heart 2

  • Patients have an 88% reduced risk of dying of a cardiac related cause when enrolled within 90 days of a heart attack compared to those not in the program.
  • The number of patients needing their cholesterol goal went from 26% to 73%.
  • The number of patients screened for cholesterol went from 55% to 97%.

The coordinated, evidence-based care, enabled by KP HealthConnect and an electronic care registries increase the survival rate dramatically among patients enrolled in the service. It is estimated that more than 135 deaths and 260 costly emergency interventions were prevented annually as a result of improved care. Now, the latest study results suggest that once a program has helped get risk factors under control, patients can then be discharged and followed virtually with the same success.

____________________________________

My Take: I think this research hits the nail on the head!  The era of the EHR is here to stay.  The faster we can get implemented and in use, the healthier people will be.  It makes it possible for someone who has a chronic condition to travel because a doctor can easily check their medical records within minutes.  This is even more important in an emergency situation.

The EHR is the best thing that could happen to the healthcare industry.  For example, you are deathly allergic to penicillin, however the accident you were just in makes it impossible to determine this.  The EHR allows the emergency room doctors to discover your allergy before prescribing penicillin for your actions, whereby saving your life.

An electronic health record also makes it easier when you move.  You do not have a bunch of paperwork to carry around with you, which could easily get lost in all the stuff and move.  Then you have to go through the process of contacting your old doctors and requesting a copy of their work records and possibly paying out a copy fee.
